Most of the daily necessities can be purchased[EM1]  in local stores here. They can also be bought in the stores of Rider University. So it is not necessary for you to bring a lot of stuff. [EM2] Here are some items you can bring:

For bathroom: Alkaline soap (碱性肥皂), Toothpaste, toothbrushes, hand towels, bath towels, laundry soap (You just need to bring a small amount of these for the first few days here. These things are not that expensive here).

  • Others: Insoles, cosmetics, napkins, Soap dish and hangers, sewing kit, umbrella, straps, nail scissors, shoulder bag or school bag or anything you specifically need. These are easy to forget but are[EM3]  necessary.

Some products, such as glasses or contact lenses, calculator, or slippers might be expensive in the USA,so bring some here in your luggage.

Tips:

For girls:  1. It is very hard for you to buy some masks or other cosmetics that have the function of whitening, or hair ties and some accessories (only for girls),so if you have that need, you’d better bring some.

                2. The pantyliners are a little bit different here[EM4] . If you are very sensitive about this, you’d better bring some.

As you arrive here, the international office will arrange to take all of you to the market (Target or Wal-Mart). Here is a suggested shopping list you can consider:

Garbage bin, Crisper, cup, dishwashing liquid, plastic hangers, table lamp, bulb or energy saving bulb, electric kettle, laundry liquid, laundry basket, body wash, body lotion, soap, shampoo & conditioner, hair dryer, or any other special needs.

Notice:

There is a one-dollar store by Macy’s at the Quaker Bridge Mall. If you don't care about the quality, you can choose to buy something there.

Computer (110V—220V):

  • If you want to bring a laptop with you, make sure you have a laptop bag, mouse, mouse pad, charger, network cable (more than 8 meters), headset, and computer camera (if your laptop does not have a camera itself).
  • If you prefer to buy a laptop in America, it will help to save some money because the price is  cheap. Also, if you buy the MacBook (Apple Inc.) through Rider, you will get $100 discount, which is really good.

Cell Phone

  • You need to decide if you want to buy a cell phone in America because you have to sign a contract with T-Mobile, AT&T, or Verizon. If you want to join the family plan, there are other requirements you have to meet.
  • There is another option, which is a prepaid cell phone. You can buy it in BestBuy or other places. However, the prepaid cell phone looks a little bit ugly, like the following pictures

  • If you want to bring a cell phone from China, make sure that your cell phone has the three frequencies (GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz). Then, you can use it in the U.S. with an American SIM card.

Adapter:

Three-prong Electrical adapter/ American outlet plug adapter(转换插头), and 6-outlet surge protector

Tips:

Generally, 2 or more three-prong electrical adaptors and one 6-outlet surge protector would be enough.

Others:

If necessary, you might need a wristwatch, USB flash drive, electronic dictionary, camera, batteries, etc. Of course, you can also buy them in America.

Stationery

In America, you can buy almost all of the stationary items that you may need, but it is still a good idea to pack some in your luggage.

  • A pencil box, a mechanical pencil with 2 lead boxes, an eraser, 3 ball point pens, 3 pens, 1 ruler.

Tips:

You can bring a pencil sharpener but you can find them in the library and classrooms. It is very different from China, because you won’t need to use pens often, unless you take notes. You will be requested to type most of your homework onto the laptop and then print it out to hand in. Furthermore, you may use pencil more than pen, even on the exam.

  • Planning calendar for 2011. It is helpful to use calendar to schedule your time efficiently.
  • Markers. (荧光笔) At least bring one marker; it helps you to highlight some important things.
  • Post-its. (便利贴). You can bring one or two packs.

Dress in Daily Life:

It is not necessary for you to bring a lot of clothes and shoes, because you have to put many other items into your luggage and there is limited room for your stuff.  Here are some tips about what to bring:

  • When you come to the United States, it is winter here and it is a little bit colder than  in Shanghai. So, you need to bring warm clothes with you such as down coats (羽绒服). It is very important for students to adapt the winter temperature at the beginning of the first year. It is quite different here, comparred to Shanghai, Lawrenceville’s winter, not wet cold, is cool cold like some areas in the north of China[JL5] . For girls, if possible, a knee length down coat would be best . It is usually warm in the classroom, so you might need to wear a thick sweater under your coat. In addition, you should bring 3-4 down coats or thick coats, 4 or more long-sleeved shirts and 2 or more scarves will be useful.

  • In summer, although it is hot outside, you will feel cold in classrooms, because the temperature of classrooms is around 20 degrees. So, cashmere sweaters or thin jackets are good choices. You can bring 2 pieces of each; it is up to you.

  •  In addition, you can easily buy some kinds of Rider style summer T shirts and short pants here, so don’t worry about taking some summer clothes. There are no dress requirements on campus. In general, local students are dressed in casual style, such as T-shirts, jeans, and sneakers.

  • The good news, is that the clothes in New Jersey are not expensive compared to Shanghai, and there is no tax on clothes on shoes. You can find some popular brands, such as A&F, American Eagle, GAP, H&M in malls or you can even do online shopping. In my personal opinion, Footlocker is a good choice for students to findi the cheapest and most popular shoes.

 Formal Dress:

Interviews and many presentations require formal dress:

Male: Suit, trousers, shirts, black or dark leather shoes, strap, dark socks and ties.

Female: Suit, trousers/dress, shirts, black or dark leather shoes, silk hose.

[EM1]Be purchased is less awkward-sounding, but it is up to you which verb you want to use in these cases ----suggestions from tutor

[EM2]Earlier in the paper, it was recommended that the students bring a lot of things. This sentence says the opposite so you are giving them a mixed message. The products available at Rider are overpriced and are only really here for convenience.

[EM3]Avoid using ‘very’ before ‘necessary’ because necessary is already a strong word.

[EM4]How are they different? This sounds scary.

[JL5]I do not understand this sentence…

Shoes:

The leather shoes are a little bit expensive in the U.S, so you should bring one or two pairs for formal dress. However, other footwear, such as slippers and sneakers are cheaper than leather shoes. So, you can bring 2 pairs or more, even if you can buy them here. It is not a problem.
